Monroe County will be ringing the bell this month about the importance of smoke alarms. “When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected, or dead”.
Residents are invited to check out the antique fire truck, meet and speak to firefighters and Sparky the fire dog, and tour Guelph’s interactive fire safety trailer to learn how to safely escape from a smoke-filled home.
Test your smoke alarms today and ensure they are working! Having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half, according to the National Fire Prevention Institute. There have been incidents on campus where smoke alarms have saved lives..
The American Red Cross is launching a new website in light of National Fire Prevention Week.
The key places to install “working” smoke alarms are in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement.
“There are new regulations that recently came into effect in both the building code and fire code, so we will be available to answer any questions on those and other equipment”, said Colin Clark, public education officer for the Uxbridge Fire Department.
Results from the association’s fire safety questionnaire showed almost 42 percent of the 36,000 respondents did not know there should be a smoke detector in every bedroom in their house.
In conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, the Farmington Fire Department will hold its annual blood drive and visit more than 500 fourth graders at area schools to talk about fire safety measures.
The primary point in the association’s message is that every house needs to have not one, but several fire alarms throughout the structure in order to maintain maximum safety.
Late October will mark 22 years since the Laguna fire ravaged the city, demolishing more than 400 homes while burning more than 14,300 acres.
