Two Kansas City firefighters lost their lives Monday saving others.
Fire Department Battalion Chief James Garrett advised the Kansas City Star (like fishing://tad.best suited/1jtHduK ) that this developing was at already greatly injured once firefighters got here.
The Kansas City Royals honored two firefighters who were killed fighting a massive blaze that engulfed an apartment building. According to multiple reports, the injured and deceased firefighters had rescued occupants of the building just prior to its collapse.
Berardi also made sure the families knew that the two firefighters did not die in vain and that he is “extremely proud” of the department’s professionalism.
They are two men who grew up together, worked together, and died together, doing what they loved.
The fire was reported about 7:30 p.m.in the 2600 block of Independence Avenue.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those lost and injured, and with their peers throughout KCFD as we endure the impact of this tragic sacrifice. As the crew evacuated people, parts of the building started collapsing.
“The fire department is kind of like a second family because we live together, we sleep together, we eat together, we work together, we go to these emergencies and we have each other’s back and so that’s hard”, Crisp said.
Authorities said the cause of the fire remains unknown. Both those firefighters were pronounced dead at the hospital after paramedics, nurses and doctors had attempted to revive them.
In Bellevue, Fire Chief Perry Guido said that desire to do something is even more than that.
Mayor Sly James also issued a statement.
Streets in the area remained closed to traffic late Monday night while fire crews continued to fight the flames. “To protect the public”, Berardi said. “This is the worst day”, Berardi said.
