However, once the door was completely broken down and the man realized he was not in danger, he immediately stopped shooting. He is expected to survive, they said. Another firefighter, John Ulmschneider, was fatally shot.

Marcus Washington reports the man who shot the firefighter killed another firefighter and injured his own brother-and has been released from custody, leaving a lot of people wondering why.

Police said the shooter could not be held since no charges have been formally filed, though the investigation is ongoing. My brother was very sick. “We were praying so hard”.

As the firefighters tried to enter the Temple Hills home, the occupant shot them, police said.

Ulmschneider “was transported in extremely critical condition to Med Star Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body”, according to a statement from the Prince George’s County Fire/Emergency Medical Services.

Yahoo News writes that the shooting took place in the Temple Hills area.

Brady said that forcing entry is something firefighters do routinely when there’s a concern about someone’s safety. One firefighter sustained a knee injury and another sustained an injury to her jaw. Both members were treated at a local hospital and released early this morning.

Angela Alsobrooks, the Prince George’s County state’s attorney, said Monday that investigators need to access “what’s reasonable given what his belief was about whether danger existed or not”. He told authorities he was anxious because his brother wasn’t answering the phone or the door and his vehicle was parked in the driveway, Brady said.

Ulmschneider, nicknamed “Skillet”, lived in St. Mary’s County and was a 13-year member of the Fire/EMS Department.

After the shooting, Brady said, the man inside the home quickly surrendered to police.

Police have not identified the man, who is accused of killing Ulmschneider, a husband and father of a 2-year-old girl.

“This is a day that we have all dreaded in our minds”, the Prince George’s County Professional Fire Fighters & Paramedics Association said on its Facebook page. God, I hope so.
