Santa Paula firefighters attack hot spots from the Solimar Fire along 101 Freeway.
About 145 firefighters were at the scene of the fire, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.
Maks said sparks and a burning bush hit their auto on the Southern California freeway, and they barely saw anything because of the smoke.
A wind-fueled brush fire that charred 1,236 acres near a Ventura County beach is now 70 percent contained, Cal Fire officials said.
The strike team, consisting of 18 firefighters, was dispatched at 6:44 a.m.to join more than 600 others in battling the blaze pushed by a strong northwest wind, which has spread to least 1,250 acres (506 hectares) of land, and which now poses a threat to oil, gas, power and rail infrastructure, according to the Ventura County Sheriff Department’s Office of Emergency Services. Fire officials could not be reached for an update. ‘It’s a very dynamic fire.
Two firefighters suffered minor ankle and knee injuries and were taken to area hospitals. There were no reports of damage to structures.
“There was nobody stopping us on the highway as we got closer and closer, so we thought it was totally safe for us to drive past it”, Maaike Maks told CNN.
