Firefighters Battle 900-Acre Brush Fire in Solimar Beach
The brush fire has gone on to burn 1,250 acres in the Solimar Beach area near Ventura, California, triggering mandatory evacuations and temporarily shuttering the 101 Freeway in both directions. Caltrans first must assess the freeway because the fire caused damage to the medians that separate traffic, Ventura County Fire Capt. Mike Lindbery said.

Fire officials say the Solimar Beach community, where there are 30 homes, and a nearby campground are under a mandatory evacuation order. During a morning press conference fire officials officials estimated they’d contained about 10 percent of the fire and would be working to put the fire out for the next three days.
“We already saw the fire 30 minutes before we actually passed it, but we didn’t realize it was this big and frightening”, she told NBC News after posting a video of the massive dancing flames on Twitter. That means firefighters will face a wildfire that will change directions, the Ventura County Fire Department said on its Facebook page.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection announced on Saturday morning the fire was only 10% contained as it reached 1,200 acres.
More than 600 firefighters are battling the blaze that still poses a threat to oil, gas, power and railroads in the area.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Ventura (101) Freeway was closed northbound at Highway 33 and southbound at Bates Road.
‘The winds are expected to shift several times today, initially blowing from the north, to the northeast and ending up from the northwest.
The wildfire was raging through 1200 acres of land just Northwest of Los Angeles in the Solimar Beach area of Ventura County.
Authorities said that the Red Cross opened a shelter at the Carpinteria Veteran’s Memorial Building, which is located at 941 Walnut Avenue in Carpinteria.
