A town home exploded in Howard County, triggering a three-alarm fire, county fire officials said. When firefighters arrived, one of the homes was fully engulfed in flames and was spreading to neighboring units.

Two people were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries and officials say several residents were evaluated for smoke inhalation.

Fire officials said a BGE utility worker was injured, but it was not immediately clear how or where the worker was as the blaze ignited.

“The explosion was so loud…I fell on the ground”, Gershman said.

Ira Gershman was preparing to break fast for Yom Kippur with family at his cousin’s residence in Clary’s Forest when a relative smelled gas. “It was a two-floor explosion”.

Authorities say 911 callers reporting the fire told them that they heard an explosion.

WTOP’s Ari Ashe reports at least four townhouses were damaged.
