A six-alarm fire in Charlestown had Boston firefighters scrambling to battle the blaze from all angles Thursday afternoon.

The flames started just before 2 p.m. on the backside of the of 284 Bunker Hill St. Fire officials said they do not know what the cause is yet, but neighbors told FOX25 they heard a large explosion before the flames began. At least 30 residents were displaced by the fire.
More than 100 area firefighters worked to snuff out the inferno, which scorched its way through the rear of a five-floor, 10-unit townhouse and jumped to two neighboring buildings, leaving all three charred in ashes, Boston Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn said.
Once the crane is through, investigators will be able to enter the building and begin to determine the cause of the fire.
Neighbors watched from the sidewalk as 120 firefighters spent hours fighting the fast moving flames, trying to keep them from spreading further.
Officials said the heavy fire has been knocked down, and they are now working on a fire in the basement.
McCarthy said the high winds were keeping the fire burning.
“I look at it now and it’s like everything is gone”.

Officials said one building is a total loss and a second building suffered what could be a multi-million dollar loss. “We’ll get through this”.
