Firefighters Battling 54000-Acre Rocky Fire

CalFire tells news that the fire is now at 47,000 acres. The fire is still only 5 percent contained and has scorched more than 73 square miles, making it almost the size of the city of Oakland. “One day it was blowing to the west, another day it was blowing to the east. This has really been a tough fight”, Rocky Fire spokesperson Paul Lowenthal said.

“The fire burned at an explosive rate”, Berlant said. “Even with a little bit cooler temperatures and higher humidities, look at what we have right now. We have active, extreme fire behavior”, Lowenthal said.

A few 8,000 firefighters are working to subdue 21 large fires – many sparked by lightning strikes – but that’s been made incredibly hard by several years of drought that have dried out the state.
