A Whitman student was among three U.S. Forest Service firefighters killed in a vehicle crash last night near Twisp, Washington.

Speaking in Chelan, U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell told reporters his agency expects to exhaust its firefighting budget by early September but said necessary funds and assets would continue to be made available where needed.

Gov. Jay Inslee says Washington is facing an “unprecedented cataclysm” from the many fires raging across the dry state.

“We mourn the loss of the fearless firefighters whose commitment to duty was so deep that they gave their own lives to protect others”, Vilsack said in a statement.

THREE firefighters have been killed as a “hellstorm” of flames apparently enveloped their vehicle when it crashed while they were battling a blaze in Washington state. “On behalf of a grateful nation, the president’s thoughts and prayers are with the families of these fearless Americans”.

Battling fires was a family affair for the Zbyszewski’s. Four other firefighters were injured. But containment is only 30 per cent on the fires that have scorched 61 square miles.

Drought and heat have combined to make this one of the most active fire seasons in the United States in recent years.

In the latest round of evacuations, residents in the the Okanogan County community of Aeneas Valley were ordered Thursday to leave the area immediately “due to rapidly advancing fire”, authorities said. They have incinerated 235,000 acres of eastern Washington State land, officials say. Three different injured firefighters have been taken to space hospitals as properly, nevertheless their circumstances have been unknown.

Nina Oakley, Western Regional Climate Center climatologist, explained how drought conditions are hindering firefighting efforts in the west during a conference call Thursday.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for the eastern portion of the state through 5 p.m. Friday.

The DNR said that the Twisp River Fire spread to 1,500 acres and grew Wednesday night, according to USA Today. That road, Highway 20, was closed to the west because of another fire near the town of Newhalem, prompting officials to tell those evacuating to head in the other direction.

David Dinsmore worked with Zbyszewski as a summer lifeguard in Twisp and said his friend was warm, caring and easy to get to know.

The most damaging of them has already destroyed 36 homes and was threatening more than 700 structures as it burned largely unchecked near the town of John Day, fire officials said.

Goldmark said there’s talk of preempting the fires, of getting people to haul out the flammable brush, “so that when the actual fire does arrive, it’s not as intense”.
