Video shot inside the venue showed concertgoers rushing to the sides trying to leave the area as a group of people tended to a person on the floor.
An 8-second video clip released by police shows the gunman bursting through the door of a VIP room in apparent pursuit of another man, who flees off-screen. Chief Robert Boyce says the fight “went on for about five minutes” before someone pulled out a gun.
Speaking on WCBS 880 Thursday morning, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said they know what happened.
One of his security guards, 33-year-old Ronald McPhatter, was killed in the shooting.
Authorities say Brooklyn-based rapper Roland Collins was shot in the leg.
In the mayhem a stray bullet hit a 21-year-old woman standing on the corner of West 28th Street and Sixth Avenue, police said.
Witnesses described a frantic, frightening scene that developed at around 10:15 p.m.
Though the concert had metal detectors, some have accused security of being careless.
Police told Billboard that the shooting took place in the green room area of the venue just after 10pm, fatally wounding McPhatter and wounding two others, a 34-year-old man and a 26-year-old women.
They say one of the men had life-threatening injuries. It’s still unclear what sparked the violence, and no suspects have been named by law enforcement, who will likely be working throughout the day to find those responsible.
NY police commissioner Bill Bratton has since condemned the “thugs” of rap he holds responsible for the deadly incident.
