First Alert Weather: Unsettled Weather This Week

This storm will have the potential to bring a mix of rain and snow early in the day, followed by some afternoon rain showers with highs in the lower to middle 40s.

Even if snow lovers resented it as only a cruel tease after a almost snowless winter, it merited note. A mix of sleet and snow showers is more likely in Southwest Virginia and along the TN/NC mountains, where temperatures will be a tad colder.

“Much lighter rain this week compared to what we saw this last week”, said Iwasko.

As of Saturday morning, the current timing would put snow moving into our western communities sometime after 3pm, and spreading across the rest of the area from west to east, through about 6pm, Sunday. North Carolina should get the most of the rain. The wind combined with dry conditions will elevate the fire danger. Expect minor snow accumulations mainly on mainly grassy surfaces. By Friday and Saturday, the entire area will be squarely in the coveted warm sector, and reap the benefits of partly sunny skies and warm southwesterly winds. But the “hard enough, long enough” is also greatly in question. This system will move in from the northwest and it does bring plenty of moisture. Overnight lows fall to the low 60s. Tonight, mostly cloudy with a low about 5 degrees on either side of 20 degrees. Sunshine is expected Friday with highs in the mid to upper 70s. That doesn’t look likely now, but the chance isn’t zero, either. We will have clouds with showers on Sunday and high temperatures in the 30s. Highs Monday will be near 40°, melting some of the snow that fell.

It does look like a genuine push of real spring weather arrives by late in the week. Hopefully that front will stay put so we can enjoy some warm temperatures by the weekend!
