Travel-related infections of Zika now total 634 cases, with 86 of those involving pregnant women, the DOH reported. Two were reported in the Wynwood area, two cases were reported with the ongoing active transmission in Miami Beach and one person was reported as a Palm Beach resident. Those locations in the Wynwood neighborhood in northern Miami and in the town of Miami Beach are now being sprayed with insecticide in order to diminish the population of the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that spread the Zika virus.
One Palm Beach County mosquito control official told The Palm Beach Post that his department relies on US regulatory agencies for assurance that the pesticide is safe. The other case is a Palm Beach resident but that is also being investigated to determine where it occurred.
