First Case Of Zika Virus Hits Utah

The two mosquito species known to transmit Zika are tropical and do not live in New England.

The US Virgin Islands Department of Health has confirmed two additional cases of zika on St Croix, bringing the total to six cases.

CDC recommends that pregnant women should consider postponing travel to affected areas. Zika has been linked to a rare birth defect in newborns, many of whom are born with abnormally small heads.

“It isn’t surprising that Utah has an imported case of Zika virus since so many of our residents travel to and from areas where the disease is now being transmitted”, Dr. Allyn Nakashima said, State Epidemiologist with the Utah Department of Health (UDOH).

China has also been on alert as experts warn the warming weather may facilitate the spread of the mosquito-borne virus.

The Zika virus has generated global headlines, sending waves of concern around the globe.

Pregnant women are the most at-risk and should avoid traveling to countries that are affected.

Baldwin said the greatest threat of the virus is to pregnant women or women who may become pregnant.

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services is seeking federal help so that it can perform Zika tests in Concord, Chan said.

Symptoms of the Zika virus include fever, joint pain, rash, conjunctivitis, headache and muscle pain. It spread dramatically through South America, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean.

There is no vaccine to prevent Zika and no specific medical treatment for the patients infected.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Brazil has reported that an increased number of people infected with the virus also have Guillain-Barré Syndrome, an immune system disorder.
