First half performance at Watford pleases Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech

“We have bought two players, Mustafi and Perez”, he said following the comfortable victory at Vicarage Road.

“So I am very happy that he scored today because that is what he is trying to add to his game”.

Petr Cech believes Arsenal’s first-half showing at Watford has got their season under way as the Gunners picked up their first win of the campaign.

“In the second half he dropped physically, but of course, we need him”. We wanted a reaction today, we’ve trained well throughout the whole week and hopefully now everyone can go to the worldwide break and hopefully come back fit.

Wenger believes that they will only get better after the global break when they return to optimum physical levels and will be able to bridge the five-point gap at the top of the league, with Chelsea and Manchester United having chalked up wins in their first three games.

“Now Mesut is almost there, not completely, but he just goes again”.

But the Italian was pleased with his side’s second-half response and praised his quartet of debutants.

“I believe we shot ourselves in the foot in first game (a 4-3 defeat to Liverpool) and were under huge pressure. Everybody else will do the same, so we will try to do our best”.

“Ozil is not physically there completely but what we want from Ozil is assists and goals and I hope he can get that this season, 10 or 15 goals plus the chances he creates”, he told BBC Sport. “We played a good game”, he said. “Lucas Perez is not in the Spanish national team so can join straight away but for Mustafi we have to wait until after the break because he goes with Germany”. Pereyra has scored on his debut and that will give him confidence.

“They had medicals. We have to finish the paperwork and I don’t know exactly when we will announce it but look, I think it could be announced at the beginning of the week”.
