“Over time, we expect Zika cases to emerge in more areas given the presence of the Aedes mosquitoes here”, the ministry said.
“But certainly we feel fairly confident that the risk assessment that there (would) be no significant increase in transmission due to the Olympics is fairly much on track”, he said.
All air/ship passengers from Singapore and other Zika-affected countries who reach the State will have to be under 14-day surveillance from the day of departure even though they do not have any evident clinical symptoms or fever. There’s a high risk that Zika could start circulating in New Orleans or Houston, the newspaper reported. He said another big unknown was whether people who might have been exposed to the African strain of Zika might be protected once the slightly different Asian version arrives.
“The risk is relatively low, but significant”.
He said the request was made to the MEA after the report of 13 affected Indians came to the forefront.
But Democrats oppose that package because it would exclude Planned Parenthood from the list of providers that would get new funding for contraception to combat the spread of Zika, which also can be transmitted sexually.
“It could be all the way from genetic [factors] to nutritional to environmental contaminants”, he said.
The Zika virus, which was first identified in the Zika Forest of Uganda in 1947, has since been known to occur in equatorial regions in Africa and Asia.
Neighbouring Malaysia has reported at least one case of locally transmitted Zika.
This means that it was probably not imported from South America, where Zika has been linked with microcephaly – a serious condition which affects unborn children.
That data is based on information collected by authorities on people who sought treatment at health facilities who were athletes or spectators.
The Centers for Disease Control reportedly said that a Aedes aegypti mosquito can spread the virus if it bites a Zika virus – infected individual and subsequently bites another individual.

Although Zika was first identified in 1947, the virus wasn’t considered a major health threat until a major outbreak in Brazil a year ago revealed that Zika can lead to severe birth defects when pregnant women are infected.
