First off the Field: Jaguars 23, Steelers 21

Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley told 1010XL, a local Jacksonville radio station, “Stable fracture”.

Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Paul Posluszny (51) sacks Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (7) in the second quarter of their game at EverBank Field. Roethlisberger, running back Le’Veon Bell, receiver Antonio Brown and several other starters sat out. Bell then added on with a 16-yard scamper off the right side.

When Roethlisberger and his top weapons departed after that first series, the momentum went with them for a while.

When the games start to count in the standings, the Steelers won’t be pulling their offense off the field after a single touchdown drive, and so there will be continued pressure applied, not only to the opposing defense but also to that team’s offense as it tries to match touchdown for touchdown.

In the second defensive series, James Harrison made his 2015 debut as he and Bud Dupree subbed in for Jarvis Jones and Arthur Moats.

Blake Bortles is ready to step up in his sophomore season (Getty). Before the game was turned over to the bottom-of-the-depth-chart guys, the Jaguars converted 5-of-8 situations in which the Steelers defense had a chance to get off the field.

Bortles’ run put Jacksonville ahead 10-8.

I’m going to make my first official pick of the preseason here at this betting blog on the Steelers to win tonight in Jacksonville.

The offense ranked No. 2 in the NFL in yards last season but struggled inside the 10. He even got four yards on an end-around play in the first quarter and finished with three catches for 30 yards. This, though, requires safeties to be both fast and athletic and the three who spent time with the first team on Friday-Shamarko Thomas, Will Allen and Alden Darby-didn’t seem up to the task. There were just too many JV moments – think delay of game – around it. It was the offense functioning as (get this!) a cohesive unit. To his credit, the across-his-body, on-the-run throw to Coates on the game’s final drive was what Tomlin would call a varsity throw.

The game began to play at a faster pace in the closing minutes of the game. The Pittsburgh Steelers were only able to muster 3 points in the NFL Hall of Fame Game against the Minnesota Vikings last week.

The Steelers will return to Pittsburgh to host the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, August 23. Now, the Steelers will have almost a full roster available to play in the field against the Jaguars. Morris would eventually sneak over the goal line and give the Jaguars a late 23-21 lead.
