First rugby medal in 92 years goes to Canada with women’s bronze

Canada has claimed a medal in every sevens event at the Olympic Games, World Cup, Sevens Series circuit overall and Pan Am Games since 2012 for a total of seven medals in seven attempts.

Canada won the bronze medal with a 33-10 victory over Britain.

Australia were crowned the first ever Olympic rugby sevens champions after beating New Zealand 24-17 in the final of the women s tournament in Rio on Monday.

“When the whistle went. I think tomorrow I’ll have to take time to reply to everyone because it has been so incredible”.

After taking a 7-0 lead, Japan fell behind 12-7, but came roaring back with a try.

But the final necessary piece, which Tait spoke about just before they flew here, seemed to be a problem until the final crucial 20-minute game when they turned everything around.

Quirk added she was feeling good despite being a bit sore. We’ve got a lot of X-factor in this group but the real strength is the collective way we play, in both attack and defence.

Her role in the historic victory in Rio, which marked the Games debut of rugby sevens, and the 2015/16 world series triumph vindicated a bold but wise move used by the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) created to deliver Olympic gold. Kia Nurse scored 25 points for the Canadians, who trailed by as many as 18 points in the third quarter before outscoring the Serbians 26-10 in the fourth.
