First Sailfish OS 2.0-powered smartphone to be unveiled tomorrow

According to Intex, the association with the Sailfish platform will help the company in offering more choices in the mobile ecosystem. Jolla claims Intex will be bringing Sailfish OS 2.0-enabled smartphones to market at some point in 2015.

Domestic smartphone manufacturer Intex Technologies said on Thursday it will soon launch, exclusively on the e-commerce platform Snapdeal, phones that will run on the new Sailfish operating system 2.0 that is now used by Finland’s Jolla.

However, NDTV reports Intex is taking into consideration the release of the smartphone in Russian Federation, but a decision will be taken later on. With its new reference program, Jolla has based its design on Qualcomm’s 200, 600, and 800 Snapdragon chips ranging from low to high processing power and cost alike.

Word is Intex’s upcoming smartphone will be priced at around Rs 15,000 outright, which is about $235 or €215.

Another important factor that may work in favour of Jolla is that the company offer a revenue share for sales generated via operating systems which will have an app interface in their environment.

“We are very excited to be the world’s first licensing partner for Sailfish OS and look forward to utilising the great user experience of the next generation Sailfish OS 2.0 in our products”.

While Jolla Ltd is exclusively focused on software, the company is intending to create another business to carry on building hardware – with more details on that due by the end of the summer.

The first Sailfish OS 2.0-based phone from Intex is already in development. “We have seen a lot of interest among Indian mobile device manufacturers and operators, and they are all very keen to work with an alternative to the now dominating mobile operating systems”. One such feature is PartnerSpace, a premium location service baked in natively into the operating system. Together with the Sailfish India ecosystem partners we believe that we can provide an exciting alternative for smartphone lovers in India and later globally as well. “India needs and deserves its own regional mobile ecosystem, an open platform, which supports local Indian services and businesses”, said Antti Saarnio, Executive Chairman of Jolla.

The Sailfish Operating system also supports Android applications. As part of Jolla’s strategy to expand in the BRICS countries, the company also said it’s setting up a subsidiary in India, Sailfish India, in cooperation with local internet players Snapdeal and Times Internet.
