First Syrian refugees arrive in Canada tonight

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump made world headlines this week when he called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims” entering the USA, and Beatty said that Trump’s “rancid” remarks would “drive Canadians in the other direction” to be more welcoming of Syrian refugees.

Those who will be considered refugees include families, women deemed to be at risk, and gay men and women. Those files were transferred to nearby countries, leaving visa officers scrambling to handle them and the start of a surge in Syrian refugee applications.

The Etobicoke-based registered charity is the primary agency providing furniture to Syrian refugees who will resettle in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) between now and February.
