RESULTS of four state elections in India announced last week gave Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party a massive victory in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state.

“It’s bewildering to so many people, because Adityanath’s public image is not at all in sync with Modi’s image”, said A K Verma, a political scientist who heads the Centre for the Study of Society and Politics in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
The Chief Minister also accused the earlier UP government of not utilising most funds allocated by the central government and vowed to follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan of “sabka saath-sabka vikas”. “The burden of his performance now rests on the prime minister, because there’s no doubt he was Modi’s choice”. However, the Chief Minister’s suggestions will be taken into account.
Addressing his first press conference as the Chief Minister, Adityanath said, “our government is fully committed to fulfil the promises that were made before elections”.
“They will divide Uttar Pradesh on communal lines. Besides tampering with the EVMs, it (BJP) has betrayed the OBCs and Brahmins”, Mayawati said.
