The Zika virus illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week and hospitalizations are rare.

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health has confirmed the province’s first case of the Zika virus.

THE Department of Health on Saturday said there was no need to panic over the Zika virus. She says there have been some instances in the US of a man traveling to the countries with Zika and then transmitting it after they have sex with their partner.

Testing for the Zika virus is now being performed by Public Health Ontario and the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg. “So we’re doing a little bit extra, and mostly that’s getting to the public the message that they can make a difference”, said Chris Richmond, of Brevard County Mosquito Control.

Preliminary results of the two case control studies conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Brazilian biomedical research centres in the northeastern states of Bahia and Paraiba should be ready “this spring”, said CDC principal deputy director Anne Schuchat.

The CDC is advising against travel to countries dealing with Zika, especially for pregnant women traveling to these areas.

“The risk to Ontarians remains very low, as the mosquitoes known to transmit the virus are not established in Canada and not well suited to our climate”, Williams said in a statement late Friday afternoon.

The patient had gone to Colombia in the South Americas and returned into the capital with the virus.

A team of World Health Organization scientists found no evidence that pyriproxyfen affects the course of pregnancy or the development of a foetus, after they recently reviewed data on the toxicology of pyriproxyfen. “It’s an association that hasn’t been proven yet”, Taylor reminded Canadians on January 29.

The Public Health Agency of Canada issued its own public health notice and travel health notice.

Amidst growing fears and increasing numbers of people infected by the mosquito-transmitted virus Zika, the World Heath Organization (WHO) delivered a positive forecast for the Rio Summer Games on Friday.

“Ensuring that Ontarians are fully informed about emerging and infectious diseases such as Zika virus is a priority”.
