The army did not name the women but said they are officers and graduates of the US Military Academy at West Point, New York.

“It’s an important moment in many ways”, Janine Davidson, a former Air Force aircraft commander and senior pilot, said just days before two women graduate from the grueling Ranger School combat leadership course, joining an all-male club for the first time.

The accomplishment marks a major breakthrough for women in the armed services at a time when each of the military branches is required to examine how to integrate women into jobs like infantryman in which they have never been allowed to serve. “It’s an incredibly big deal”.

“Carson could definitely be beneficiary of a Trump implosion, but he can’t count on that”.

Army Secretary John McHugh congratulated the Army’s newest Ranger-qualified soldiers Monday evening in a prepared statement.

The two female soldiers will be among 96 who will graduate Friday from the program at Fort Benning, Georgia.

The president expects the Army to produce some female Rangers so he can crow about how he’s on the “right side of history”.

The women, however, are not eligible to apply to join the 75th Ranger Regiment, a special operations force, as the Defense Department has not yet decided on combat roles for women.

The next hurdle these women will have to jump over: whether the Army allows them to become a part of an actual Ranger regiment.

Despite Gen. Odierno’s enthusiasm, the question of women in combat still isn’t settled.

The success of the two women graduting this week will be a factor in deciding whether women will serve in combat arms.

“It’s game over for a discussion of whether women can successfully serve”, he said.

The military services have been steadily opening jobs to women over recent years, but the infantry and special operations fields are the most physically demanding and require that troops live close together in often primitive field conditions.

Dem candidates who haven’t made up their mind on the Iran deal are being targeted.

The two successful graduates will wear the prestigious Ranger Tab on their uniforms. The military services have pledged to do so without compromising standards.
