Police armed with rifles fanned out near the university to look for Justin Beauregard, 29, after his mother called police around 6:30 p.m., reporting her son was armed and upset.

A 29-year-old Fitchburg man is facing multiple charges after forcing Fitchburg State University into a lockdown for hours on Thursday.

University spokesman Matthew Bruun (broon) says classes don’t begin until September 3 and most students haven’t arrived.

Beauregard was taken into custody without incident, Giannini said.

The man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and firing a weapon near a dwelling.

Beauregard is slated for arraignment in Fitchburg District Court on Friday.

According to investigators, Beauregard is known to police and was not targeting the school at the time.
