Four of these deaths took place at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH). It is the mosquito – the flying insect that has caused the most human deaths by any animal in history. “Eighty-year-old Mahendra Singh from Ghaziabad died of chikungunya complications yesterday afternoon”.

He also made it clear that there were no clear evidences of death due to chikungunya, “We can’t say if deaths were due to chikungunya; don’t have evidence of other diseases, we have evidence only of organ failure”.

In an affidavit filed in the court, it said strict surveillance of preparedness and impact of these diseases has been carried out for taking further preventive measures as, due to environmental conditions, the number of diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and malaria shows an upswing during July to October. “We will probe as to why in one hospital there have been chikungunya deaths”, he said. She had died on 1st September 2016.

According to the hospital, the two men – aged 50 years and 30 years – were admitted to the hospital with kidney problems. Delhi has reported more than 1,000 cases of the disease this year.

PTI reported that the victims were 80-years-old and above.

Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain informed the L-G that the government has cancelled leave of all hospital staff and has issued directions to hospitals to employ temporary staff for the next two months.

“There is no need to panic”.

Mr Nadda stressed the need to start rigorous awareness campaigns regarding the preventive steps to be taken by the people in their communities.

Taking stock of the situation, Shri Nadda was briefed on the recent upsurge in the cases of Dengue and Chikungunya in Delhi, NCR and other States. “There are 200 deaths in Delhi every day, but nobody asks about it”, he told a press conference.

The state health minister, who was in Goa till yesterday (Sept. 13) has blamed the media for spreading panic. The Delhi government has put the onus on Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and the Centre for the outbreak even as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues have come in for criticism for remaining “absent” from the city.

The death toll due to dengue in the national capital mounted to 14 as AIIMS confirmed the five cases of fatalities due to the vector-borne disease which has also affected over 1,150 people this season.
