In high-water vehicles, boats and helicopters, emergency crews hurried to rescue scores of south Louisiana residents as the governor warned it was not over.
– More than 20,000: The number of people who have had to be rescued from their homes as floodwaters rose.
This video released by the United States coast guard showed the dramatic moment one family was winched to safety after their home was consumed by flood waters. The woman, who is not initially visible on camera, yells from inside the auto: “Oh my god, I’m drowning”.
The video shows the man pulling a woman to safety and then also saving her dog. As she gasped for air, the first words she said were, “Get my dog!”
Edwards had declared a state of emergency in the state on Friday after heavy rains downpoured in southeast Louisiana. He and his family were even forced to leave the Governor’s Mansion when chest-high water filled the basement and electricity was shut off.
Although the storms that caused the flooding have moved to the west, another 2 to 4 inches of rain was expected Sunday in and around Baton Rouge.
Rivers and their tributaries swelled and bulged beyond their banks.
Stay tuned for more updates on the State of Louisiana’s flood disasters. Farmland was covered and streets descended into impassable pools of water. Thousands were evacuated in Livingston Parish, near the capital Baton Rouge, the sheriff’s department told local media. While 1 or 2 inches of rain usually wouldn’t be a problem, with the ground already saturated there isn’t anywhere for more rain to go.
Obama issued the disaster designation shortly after speaking with Edwards on Sunday, the White House said in a statement.
Almost 1,700 Louisiana National Guard troops are working to rescue stranded residents and support relief operations after heavy flash flooding devastated 12 parishes in the state. “We have not forgotten you”. “It has not stopped at all today”. The biggest amount was in Watson, Louisiana, which was deluged with 31.4 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service.
Just how much rain fell across southern Louisiana late last week and over the weekend?
As part of the rescue efforts, Louisiana State Police used helicopters to disburse food and water to motorists who had gotten stuck in the Baton Rouge area.
A storm that’s been drenching southeast Louisiana is forecast to head toward the central and northern part of the state while parts of southern MS are under a state of emergency.
Edwards declared a state of emergency Friday.
Just as the auto was sucked under water, becoming submerged, a rescue worker reached the vehicle and dove into the water on the driver’s side.
“Everybody is just exhausted and nervous and wanting to see what kind of damage they have to their home”, Rachel Fitzpatrick said.
“This is the worst it’s been, ever”, Mitchell said of the flooding.
Mitchell fears he lost their trailer home and his vehicle, which was flooded up to the seats.
However, he explained that it’ll be some time before the flood waters recede.
Shanita Angrum, 32, called the police when she realised her family were trapped in their home. An officer arrived and carried her six-year-old daughter to safety.
“As long as my kids are safe, that’s all that matters”, she said.
A woman and her dog were rescued from a vehicle sinking in floodwater by men who arrived on a boat at the flawless time.
“Someone saw us on Facebook and rescued us”, Flowers said.
The body of a 68-year-old man was recovered on Friday near Baker after he drowned, said William “Beau” Clark, the coroner in East Baton Rouge Parish.
The National Weather Service warned that backwater flooding was a risk along the streams that flow into the Amite River. “It is ongoing. It is not over”, said the governor. Officials were not sure just how widespread the damage would be. More than 500 pets have also been rescued, according to authorities.
