Five-Game Losing Slump Knocks Orioles Off Top of AL East

As is customary, the back end of the Jays’ season is loaded with games within the AL East, so they will have ample opportunity to either catch Baltimore or Boston – or, if they pull ahead, create some distance from them.

Chapman suffered his first blown save with the Cubs since coming over from the New York Yankees in a blockbuster trade Monday.

Schoop had three hits Sunday after going 1 for 20 in his previous five games.

In fact, Sanchez faced just three batters over the minimum through six scoreless innings.

Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin, who hit a two-run double in a seven-run fifth on Saturday, realizes there is a long way to go, but that reaching first has some significance. He struck out 11 while allowing two runs and five hits. The solo shot was Tulowitzki’s 18th homer of the season, giving Toronto a 2-0 lead.

Walker also had an RBI triple, but NY sustained another costly injury when shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera strained the patella tendon in his left knee – the same injury that sidelined him for a little more than two weeks during spring training.

Both pitchers would continue to dominate, all the way through to the seventh inning. Jeurys Familia struck out two in a ideal ninth for his 37th save.

Last week, the Orioles seemed buoyant-after suffering a four-game losing skid, they bounced back with a five-game winning streak reclaimed the top spot in the American League East.

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Chris Tillman throws against the Toronto Blue Jays during the first inning of a baseball game in Toronto, Sunday, July 31, 2016.

First pitch at 6:10pm.

He issued a four-pitch walk to Pedro Alvarez to begin the inning before Alvarez moved to second on a balk and scored on Schoop’s single.

MILWAUKEE – Jonathan Lucroy waved his helmet to acknowledge a standing ovation at Miller Park and, in what could be his final appearance for Milwaukee, flied out as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning. Still, he battled through 5.2 innings and only allowed the two runs. He did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, when Martin singled up the middle.

Jeff Francoeur hit a two-run homer to the opposite field in the seventh inning as Atlanta beat Philadelphia. Carlos Martinez (10-6, 2.87) pitches for the Cardinals.

RANGERS 5, ROYALS 3: Mitch Moreland homered for the fifth time in his last five starts and Lucas Harrell won in his Texas debut as the Rangers beat Kansas City to finish a sweep of the four-game series. Dozier’s home runs came after the White Sox had cut the Twins’ lead to 4-3 in the fourth inning.

Sam Dyson got his 22nd save.

Dillon Gee (3-5) gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings.

Adeiny Hechavarria scored from first on a two-out triple by Derek Dietrich in the bottom of the ninth inning as Miami rallied to defeat St. Louis. It had not been alone atop its division since a 2-0 start.

Cain struck out five, leaving after 93 pitches.

Mariners right-hander Steve Cishek pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 25th save.

Playing without ailing slugger Yoenis Cespedes, New York won for only the second time in 10 home games. In his next at-bat he was hit by Tillman, raising the question if the Orioles starter pitched him high and up on objective. Tony Cingrani worked the ninth for his 13th save. Bundy is 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in three starts since joining the rotation.

Claiming big wins were the Detroit Tigers (11-0 over the Houston Astros), Cleveland Indians (8-0 over the Oakland Athletics) and Los Angeles Dodgers (14-3 over the Arizona Diamondbacks).
