Five people killed in Bakersfield-area plane crash
Five people died Saturday when a single-engine plane crashed into an almond orchard in central California, local and federal authorities said Sunday. “It’s going to affect a smaller community, I’m told, (far) north of Bakersfield”.

The Sheriff’s Office, Bakersfield Police Department, California Highway Patrol and Kern County Fire Department responded to the area and conducted a ground search, the release said.
Sheriff’s officials found aircraft debris scattered across a quarter mile in a central California orchard, near Panama Lane and South Allen Road, hours after the pilot sent a mayday call and the plane disappeared from radar, authorities said.
Beasley noted that the plane’s tail number has not been found.
Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were on scene yesterday morning, trying to determine the cause of the crash.
FAA records list an address for an owner of the plane.
The NTSB is in charge of the investigation.
A sheriff’s officer said it may take a day or two to identify all of the plane debris before the investigation on the possible cause can begin.
Carpenter said that they aren’t sure how many were onboard the aircraft when it crashed and he’s not sure if weather was a factor.

The crash was only about 30 miles from the site of a medical helicopter crash that killed four people in heavy rain and fog 10 days earlier, The Associated Press reported.
