Hagino, who won the 400m medley last weekend, produced a quick finish to pinch silver in 1:56.61, with China’s Wang Shun coming through for a surprise bronze in 1:57.05. Thirteen of his golds have come in individual races, the rest in relays. I can say that’s definitely how Chase is right now. I know that after this – well, now – I’m gonna need some time off.

With the exception of Phelps’ longtime coach, Bob Bowman, perhaps no one has pushed him harder than Lochte, who has battled him for 12 years in the 200 and 400 IM.

“That hurt a lot … my body is in pain, my legs are hurting, I’m exhausted”.

Despite winning four golds in London in 2012, Phelps has said he was dissatisfied with his preparation and results there and wants to bow out on his own terms.

One of the blue ribbon events of the track cycling competition at Rio 2016 will see reigning world champions Australia up against reigning Olympic champions Great Britain. At the medal ceremony he swayed slightly and breathed deeply, his eyes moist, as he listened to the USA anthem.

Boomer Phelps and his mom Nicole Johnson are staples in the stands of the Olympic pool watching and cheering on his 22-time Olympic medalist daddy. The summer going into eighth grade, Phelps swept the medleys in Athens and Lochte earned silver in the 200m IM behind him. Phelps pulled ahead by four-tenths of a second after the breaststroke leg. Phelps nailed his turn; Lochte lost momentum into the final lap from his last wall. Leading at the midway point, Lochte faded to fifth almost 3 seconds behind the victor.

After a strong start from local favourite Thiago Pereira, Phelps took charge on the backstroke leg before powering away to win in one minute, 54.66 seconds – nearly two seconds clear of Japan’s Kosuke Hagino in second.

Simultaneously, he also became the third Olympian to win gold in the same event at four Olympics – joining discus thrower Al Oerter and Carl Lewis.
