Five things we learned about the Baltimore Ravens week 1
Receiver Steve Smith Sr. led the Ravens with five catches, while Mike Wallace caught for a team-high 91 yards. Buffalo was outgained almost 2-to-1 in yardage (308-160), was successful on only 3-of-13 third downs, committed eight penalties for 89 yards, lost time of possession by almost six minutes, made only 11 first downs to Baltimore’s 18 and missed a key field goal. “It’s still a work in progress”.

OUR PICK: The Ravens have become a poor home bet, going 1-9-1 against the spread in their last 11 games in Baltimore.
The Ravens’ quarterback was hit plenty of times in his first regular season game after knee surgery, and he reacted just fine. He also endured four sacks but was able to bounce back each time. Weddle was signed as a free agent and Webb has been shifted to free safety from cornerback. Both losses have come against the Baltimore Ravens.
“It was a great throw”, Wallace said. “The run defense was really good”.
“Getting Tyrod on the ground is pretty hard”, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “We did not have critical penalties down the stretch”. “We should be better in a number of phases of the game”.
“I’ve got to be a smarter football player”, Hughes said.
Give the Ravens defence credit for Buffalo’s dismal day on offence.
Ryan left the Ravens to coach the New York Jets from 2009-2014 and is now in his second year with the Bills. “Sometimes they bring more than we can block”. “We know they’re explosive when they’re making guys miss tackles, so that was important today, and I was able to get that done”. The Bills had four personal foul calls, and finished the day with eight penalties for 89 yards. Bills fans certainly don’t want to hear it from Taylor, too. Without another true playmaker or – at the minimum – someone that can distract the secondary, the Bills’ passing game will likely struggle this season. Running back LeSean McCoy scored Buffalo’s only points of the game on a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Baltimore dismantled every weapon in Buffalos offensive arsenal, holding the Bills in the second half to just 72 total yards, zero third-down conversions (in six attempts) and zero points.
“It was a bad day”. Two receptions were for first downs, including a third-down conversion. “We had one long drive and that was it”.
Given one more chance to lead the Bills back, Taylor, the former Raven, had the ball in his hands with 5:35 to play, and Buffalo trailing by six. That group delivered impressive performance against the Bills. After a loss of 3-yards on a Reggie Bush run play, Taylor connected with Tight End Charles Clay for 33 yards to the Baltimore three yard line. Timmy Jernigan and Terrell Suggs each finished with a sack. He completed just 15 of 22 passes for 111 yards. We just have to do a good job on defense of doing what we’re supposed to do – having good eyes and doing our technique, following our assignments and being where we’re supposed to be. “One of our main focuses and goals was nothing over the top of us”.
“It’s a pretty darn good defense over there”, Ryan said. That was the Browns, who play host to the Ravens on Sunday. It was a positive step all-around. We need more of those plays. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman has never lost an opener. The team that led the league previous year in both rushing yards per game and yards per play had a measly 65 yards on the ground and averaged only 2.7 per play. Three plays later, running back Terrance West picked up two yards on third-and-1 following the two-minute warning.

The Bills offense did not get a first down in the quarter. Nonetheless, the two backs are perfectly happy to split carries. “I think the sky is the limit for us”.
