Well, that was a little unexpected, but the concerns of Mark Giordano potentially leaving for greener pastures appears to be avoided for now.

It’s has been released that the Calgary Flames and star defenseman Mark Giordano, have agreed on a new 6-year/$40.5 million dollar contract extension. The deal will go until the end of 2021-22.

Last season, Giordano was an All-Star before suffering a biceps injury on February 23.

The Toronto native watched from the press box as the Flames secured a playoff berth in their last home game of the regular season. One would have to assume that Treliving’s preemptive notion of dealing with things sooner than later could lead to smart, sensible contracts for Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau. He is entering the final year of a five-year deal that earns him more than $4 million against the salary cap.

Don’t be surprise to see Calgary in the postseason in 2015-16. A decent possession-driving game to accompany those scoring stats and both a well-played puck moving strategy and a propensity for taking shots on net added to those goal totals to put Giordano in the running for a Norris Trophy; had he not gone down with a torn bicep tendon early in the spring, it’s possible the award could have been his. The Calgary Flames Sports and Entertainment Corporation revealed a $900-million plan last week for a new hockey arena and indoor football field/field house. “I’m really looking forward to getting into Calgary and learning more about it”.

The Flames captain’s extension also solidifies a strong group of defenceman following the acquisition of Dougie Hamilton from the Boston Bruins. The GM quickly signed the 22-year-old to a $34.5-million, six-year deal. “We can spread the minutes out”.

As we have seen in the past, for players aged 30+, the key factor in the negotiations is term.
