Winneshiek County, Iowa is dealing with major flooding.
An emergency shelter is being set up at Stone Ridge Community Church Montgomery Street and Highway 9 in Decorah.
Other areas significantly impacted are Bluffton, Deocrah, Fort Atkinson and other areas along rivers and streams. The Salvation Army will be there with food and cleaning kits.
Several roads within Winneshiek County have been closed and washed out due to the flooding.
The City of Decorah tweeted on Wednesday morning, “Please stay off the roads unless an emergency or you are being evacuated”.
Rainfall amounts ranged from about 1 to as much as 7 inches or rain across the area with the hardest hit areas from near Riceville to Decorah. There will may be numerous closures where water has gone over the roadways and has washed them out.
The weather service says the flooding “will worsen or continue for the day” and is urging people to avoid travel in the area. Sandbagging and rescues are underway due to flash flooding.
