Flash flood watch for SW and south central Louisiana

Parts of Texas have been inundated with rain in the last week, and more than half of the state has been under flood watches or warnings.

Heavy rains are expected to linger in the area through at least tomorrow morning due to the unusually slow moving storms. National Weather Service forecasts called for an additional three-to-five inches of rainfall over the next 48 hours, with isolated areas possibly seeing eight-to-twelve inches. Prisons also had to be evacuated due to severe flooding.

So far, six people have died from the recent floods in Texas. It’s not only your house that might get water in it, it’s not only that your streets might become inaccessible; your whole neighborhood might become inaccessible. According to the Fort Bend County Sheriff, some of these cows did make it to higher ground, but it is not clear how many survived. He declared a state of disaster in 31 Texas counties on Wednesday, mobilizing state resources to help manage the disaster.

Flooding in Texas has left much of the region under water as rivers rise to historic levels. A Brazos River Authority map shows all 11 of the reservoirs fed by the Brazos at 95 to 100 percent capacity.

One more flood-related death in the state was likely, San Antonio police said on Friday after recovering the body of a man caught in metal bars at a river drainage spot.

Forecasters say scattered thunderstorms will continue across the state through Thursday night, although severe storms are not expected.

The nearly stationary storms are – very slowly – moving to the north from areas south of DFW. In April, more than a foot of rain fell in parts of Houston, submerging scores of subdivisions and several major highways, forcing the closure of schools and knocking out power to thousands of residents who were urged to shelter in place. Numerous inmates were sent to other units with available beds, it said.
