Flash flooding prompts rescues, closures in Kansas City

Severe storms raked through areas north of the Kansas City metropolitan area, bringing heavy rain and several reports of tornadoes. A flash flood emergency was in effect, a feat in itself as an emergency has never been issued by the National Weather Service Kansas City office before tonight.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for the immediate downtown Kansas City area.

Flooding was also a major concern.

The Kansas City Fire Department reported conducting multiple rescues in locations including downtown, the Plaza district and northeast Kansas City.

Several tow companies responded to the heavily affected roads and towed dozens of vehicles.

KCTV reports Westport was one of the hardest-hit areas.

According to Johnson County Emergency Management, at least 10 water rescues were reported.

Rains and some thunderstorms were forecast in parts of the region on Saturday, but were not expected to cause further flooding, Hawblitzel said.
