Studies show having a working smoke alarm more than doubles your chances of surviving a fire, but more than half of Springfield’s homes have no working alarm. Ionization alarms work best when a fast-moving fire occurs. Three out of five home fire deaths are in homes that have no smoke alarms or non-working smoke alarms.
Residents are invited to check out the antique fire truck, meet and speak to firefighters and Sparky the fire dog, and tour Guelph’s interactive fire safety trailer to learn how to safely escape from a smoke-filled home. “It is important residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire, especially in their homes”, continued the proclamation.
Just hold down the test button on the smoke alarm.
50 percent of fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. when most people are asleep. Smoke alarms should be at least 10 feet from the stove.
Fire prevention week is October 4-10.
October is Fire Prevention Month, and the Springfield Fire Department will once again use the designation as an opportunity to educate Springfield citizens about fire safety.
West Kelowna Fire Rescue hopes to save families from preventable tragedies through their Fire Prevention Week initiatives.
So how can you tell if yours needs to be replaced?

“Smoke alarms are your first line of defense”, said Martin Johnson, chair, Firefighters Burn Fund. “Having alarms sound from anywhere in the home is the goal of proper installation”. Since September 20, fires have damaged a home on Archer Avenue, a rooming house on Courtland Avenue, a home on Bertch Avenue and an apartment on Grant Avenue.
