Flint mayor: ‘Shame’ on Snyder if he won’t back lead pipe removal

The cash-strapped city was reportedly hoping to save $5 million over two years by drawing water from the Flint River beginning in April 2014 rather than continuing to buy it from nearby Detroit.

The appropriation also would include $63 million for improving the physical, social and educational well-being of Flint children and other vulnerable residents and $37 million for safe drinking water efforts, according to the Detroit Free Press, citing an unnamed source familiar with the fiscal 2017 budget. There is a $1 billion supplemental proposal for infrastructure aid by U.S. Rep. Candice Miller, R-Harrison Township, and a broader proposal by U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint Township, that would authorize $385 million in direct grants for Flint to inspect, fix or replace public and private water service lines and to fund corrosion control programs.

The lawsuit alleges the toddler experienced “serious physical and emotion injury due to her exposure to the toxic water”.

“We’re here to investigate what possible crimes there are, anything to the involuntary manslaughter or death that may have happened to some young person or old person because of this poisoning, to misconduct in office”, Flood said Tuesday in a press conference.

Also Tuesday, officials with General Motors and the United Auto Workers union said they plan to donate $3 million to support increased health and education services for Flint children who have been exposed to lead.

That dollar figure is what her public works staff and experts from the Lansing Board of Water and Light came up with during a meeting Monday, she said. Gov. Rick Snyder formally announced the $30 million plan last week.
