Flood cleanup underway in Louisiana

More than 15,000 people have been rescued from floodwaters in the parish since the storms began Friday and more were still ongoing Monday even as the water was draining in some areas.

Since Friday, about two feet (60 centimeters) of rain slammed southern Louisiana for 48 hours, inundating local homes and businesses with floodwaters that have yet to recede in the vast majority of areas.

Devin George, the state registrar for vital records, said the storm-related deaths include two people in East Baton Rouge Parish, two in St. Helena Parish and two in Tangipahoa Parish as of Monday. There’s been at least 11 deaths so far because of the floods, the Weather Channel reports, and that number is unfortunately expected to rise.

The designation frees up federal money to aid with rescue operations and emergency housing, among other things. The site has links to federal, state and nonprofit agencies offering assistance for water-damaged companies. Twenty parishes were included in the federal disaster declaration.
