Flood situation grim in Odisha, 5 dead so far

At least 100 people were killed in incidents caused by landslide, flood and rains in several states in India, mostly in the eastern state of West Bengal, said officials Sunday. As many as 36,90,627 people in the state have been hit. “While the entire state administration is working to reach out to the affected, we urge all political parties and NGOs to assist in relief work”, Banerjee said.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met district officials and postponed her upcoming north Bengal tour. A total of 17 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed for rescue and relief operations in Gujarat.

Almost five lakh people in several districts of Odisha continue to reel under flood fury, which has officially claimed five lives so far.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Chief Minister of Gujarat Anandiben Patel and Manipur CM Okram Ibobi Singh and enquired about the rescue and relief operations going on in the wake of floods and landslides respectively, as part of the monitoring.

Responding to the situation, the state Irrigation and Flood Control Department has reportedly opened one control room with the number 0385-2451550 in Imphal. He said Bhadrak, Mayurbhaj, Jajpur and Keonjhar districts in northern Odisha were also hit by floods.

The army has carried rescue and relief operations in Jhawdanga village in Purbasthali Block 2 in Burdwan district from their base camp in Panagarh. This may lead to increased inflow of water into Hirakud. A total of 05 people lost their lives and 644 villages and population – 480399 are affected.

In Manipur, about 20 villagers of Joumol Village in District Chandel were swept away by landslide including 12 houses. Burdwan District Magistrate has said to HT that 150 villagers were still stuck and army was rescuing them.

Two teams of NDRF have been earmarked for rescue and relief operations in Village Joumol. With cyclone Komen showing no signs of receding, the situation is likely to aggravate in Odisha and West Bengal.

Rescue operations have been carried out by Indian Army personnel at Jhawdanga village in Burdwan district from their base camp at Panagarh. Places like Mukundpur, Dum Dum Park and Alipore Bodyguard Lines remain inundated, as people used boats to ferry across.

A total of 132 boats have been deployed for rescue operations.
