Flooding forcing evacuations, traffic troubles in Missouri

The St. Louis area is increasingly hard to drive through, as floodwaters have poured over two interstate highways and hundreds of other spots on smaller roads.

The Weather Channel calls the situation a “slow-motion disaster” as the swollen rivers make their way to the Gulf.

Widespread flooding in Missouri this week has forced the evacuation of a number of towns, closed major stretches of highways, and killed upwards of 20 people.

Amid the worst flood this town has ever seen, Tammy Morgan took a break Wednesday from shoveling sand into the yellow bags she hoped would save her business, and pointed to a line of treetops rising from the water.

Just after Christmas the bursts of rain, which amounted to 6-12 inches in some areas, sealed the fate for river flooding.

Police say the two were last seen Monday and divers concentrated their search Wednesday near flooded areas of Sangchris Lake and Pawnee, where one of the teen’s cellphone was tracked. But the pressure eased after Beaver Lake upstream in Arkansas closed its spillway, sending less water into Table Rock Lake, whose water level had begun to drop.

Flooding along the Meramac River in Missouri is setting records. In addition, Three historic sites have been closed by the flooding, according to the Associated Press.

The Coast Guard said the advisory is expected to remain in effect for several weeks.

The river also caused major transportation issues.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon activated several hundred National Guard troops Tuesday to help direct people away from flooded roads, according to Mike O’Connell, a spokesman for the Missouri Department of Public Safety.

In Eureka, southwest of St. Louis, firefighters and their boats have been in high demand since Tuesday, accounting for roughly four dozen rescues of people in their homes, businesses or vehicles. “We expect this plant to be flooded completely before the event is over”, the metropolitan sewer district director, Brian Hoelscher, told local television station KMOV.

“Right now we’re moving out everything out of the houses, everything out of the yards”, added another resident, James Sell.

“I got the cats out and everything else is replaceable”, said Irwin, who noted that construction work will be readily available after the flood.

The Mississippi River neared record levels at many places, and a tributary, the Meramec River, surged 4 feet beyond previous records before finally starting to fall. Most of those earthen barriers were meant to protect farmland rather than populated areas and one held the MS back from the now-deserted manmade Chouteau Island on the IL side.
