Floods in Britain prompt emergency government talks
Britain’s government was holding emergency talks on Sunday as flooding in northern England forced hundreds of people to leave their homes, including in the historic tourist destination of York.

Some 24 flood warnings are in place in the North East – warning of a risk to life – while there are a further 115 flood warnings and 102 flood alerts across Wales and much of western England.
Prime Minister David Cameron said he would send more military personnel to assist families affected by the post-Christmas disaster, after he hosted the conference call talks.
In addition hundreds of weather warnings remain in place in the north and in north Wales.

People are being advised to move valuables and take advice from emergency services about evacuation.

Flooding defences in York, Leeds and Lancashire have become overwhelmed over recent days, with Leeds and Greater Manchester being the latest places to be succumbed to flooding.
North Yorkshire Police said they have run out of “road closed” signs, writing in a tweet: “Several calls from people that have driven into floodwater, we have run out of road closed signs, don’t enter floodwater, avoid flooded roads”.
BBC north of England correspondent Danny Savage said on Saturday: “Everywhere I have been in Yorkshire today, whether people have lived there for 15 or 50 years, they have said the same thing to me – in their lifetime, they have never seen flooding like this”.
The River Foss – which barely reaches more than a few feet in summer – burst its banks in the city centre yesterday evening, flooding one of the main routes through the city, Foss Islands Road and spreading into the Morrisons supermarket auto park on the far side.
He also echoed the promise of Environment Secretary Liz Truss that the Government would review flood defences.
“We’re making efforts to ensure contact with these people in the worst affected areas and give them any extra support they might need”.
A total of 8,100 homes were without power in the North West just before 1am, including 5,500 in Rochdale, after water breached flood defences at a substation.
Eleven flood warnings have been issued in Scotland covering the Borders and Tayside areas.

A Welsh Government spokeswoman said: “We have committed nearly £300m over the life of this government including European funding to managing flood risk and we are committing an additional £150m to coastal risk from 2018”.
