Florida Gov. Scott: Miami’s Wynwood arts district no longer active Zika zone
A Miami-Dade County mosquito control inspector walks through the Wynwood neighborhood looking for mosquitoes and mosquito breeding areas.

Scott made the announcement following 45 days with no evidence of active Zika transmission in the entire Wynwood zone, which was originally about one square mile (2.6 square kilometers). The CDC’s travel advisory remains in effect for the state’s other active zone of transmission, Miami Beach.
Dr. Amesh Adalja of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center said Scott is “rightly touting the major progress in Wynwood in controlling Zika”, adding that he is also trying to lift the stigma on that area where the first local transmission of Zika occurred in a USA state.
Gov. Rick Scott announced Monday that Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood was no longer considered a zone of active Zika transmission.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) attributed the success in mosquito control to the aerial application of the larvicide Bti and the adulticide Naled. He recommends that people traveling overseas avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes for 10 days after they return and said they should go to a doctor if they experience any of the common symptoms such as fever, rash, joint pain and red, itchy eyes.
Rick Scott announced Monday morning during a visit to Wynwood that the Centers for Disease Control has lifted a Zika-related travel advisory hanging over the arts district since early August.
Scott added that officials are working to stop Zika’s spread in Miami Beach.
But the CDC is not exactly advising pregnant women to go to Wynwood. Five new cases were recorded on Friday in nearby Miami Beach.
Dr. Lyle Petersen of the CDC told Time that containment has been less successful in Miami Beach because “tall buildings and ocean breezes” render aerial pesticide spraying less effective.

Wynwood became the first community in the country where mosquitoes were believed to carry the virus, which often causes no symptoms but can cause birth defects if contracted by pregnant women. Mosquito season in South Florida continues through the fall, and additional cases could be identified, the CDC said. “Florida may have been the first location to have locally transmitted Zika, but we will not be the last”.
