Florida governor complains U.S. not doing enough to fight Zika
As of August 9, nine cases had been reported in the state.

The second case of imported Zika virus has been reported by the Department of Health. Before that discovery, people in the United States who tested positive for Zika had been infected while traveling to countries where the virus is present, or by engaging in sexual contact with infected individuals.
Florida is also undergoing a Zika virus crisis.
The Ministry of Health has teamed up with several local and regional stakeholders to develop new response to the Zika virus as it threatens the tourism industry and sparks panic among pregnant women as medical studies are linking potential serious birth defects to newborn babies.
With the Zika virus in the forefront of the news from the aftermath of the Rio Summer Olympics to confirmed cases in Alabama, scammers are exploiting these headlines to defraud consumers.
In a teleconference on Wednesday, Scott made a plea for more support in fighting Zika, complaining that “Congress and the White House have not been good partners”. Five months later, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the first case of mosquito-borne infection in the US in residents of Florida, in a neighborhood near Miami. He had also asked for additional lab support personnel to speed testing. Of this group, the researchers identified 17 fetuses or newborns of women who had imaging at the institute, as well as documented Zika infection in fluid or tissue, and 28 fetuses or newborns with brain findings suspicious for Zika infection with intracranial calcifications.
“CDC has and will continue to provide the support to Florida to address the Zika outbreak”. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, whose city sits across the bay from Pinellas County, said Tuesday that he isn’t waiting for federal, state or county officials to act.
Jeanne Atherden, the Minister of Health, maintained there had been no local spread of the virus.
“It is not right to play politics with people’s lives”, Levine said. We will continue to work with the community to get the information out there.
Asked about delays in delivering the kits in a conference call on Friday, CDC Director Thomas Frieden said the agency had already provided 10,000 products containing the insect repellant DEET for use in Florida.

The fact sheet further advises, “Prevent indoor mosquito bites by screening windows, keeping windows closed, sleeping under a bed net during the day, wearing long sleeve clothing during the day when these mosquitoes are most active, and by using repellents contains 30%-50% DEET (DEET is not recommended to use on children under 6 months of age) applied to exposed skin or clothing”. Zika seems to damage the nerves in a developing fetus so that sometimes “muscles aren’t developing normally because they don’t have the nerve impulses to move normally”, she said.
