Florida governor says no Zika transmission in Miami’s Wynwood in 45 days
MIAMI (AP) – With health authorities declaring a win against Zika in Miami’s Wynwood arts district, their emphasis shifts to the remaining transmission zone on nearby Miami Beach, where residents have objected to the aerial pesticide spraying crediting with halting infections. Health officials said that over the past several weeks, mosquito control workers there have seen fewer of the insects, the main culprits in spreading the virus.

USA health officials on Monday lifted the Zika virus travel advisory that urged pregnant women to avoid travel to Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood.
“We want to continue to emphasize to pregnant women that they still should consider postponing non-essential travel for all of Miami-Dade (County)”.
So far, Florida is the only US state that has reported local Zika transmission by mosquitoes.
Earlier Monday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott visited the Wynwood area north of downtown Miami.
“When we announced Wynwood as the first place in our nation to have local transmission of the Zika virus, Wynwood was immediately sent into the national spotlight”, Scott said in a statement today. “We have more than 93 cases of locally acquired Zika in Florida and on Friday, we extended the Miami Beach Zika zone to an area of about 4.5 miles”, Florida Governor Rick Scott said.
The Zika virus has not been eliminated throughout South Florida, though, as cases have been confirmed in the region in people returned from overseas trips. Even though this one area is Zika-free, the virus is still a problem in Florida. He said aerial spraying is not planned for the expanded area unless the CDC tells them to do so.
As of Friday, the Florida Department of Health counted 835 Zika cases, including 660 “travel-related” cases involving patients infected outside the United States, 79 cases contracted in Florida and 86 infections of pregnant women.
In his interview with Perlmutter, Callahan explained that Miami-Dade’s decision to blanket Zika-affected areas with pesticides, especially naled, stems from the county’s preexisting plan to beat back the West Nile virus. “We’ve also hired additional staff to run more tests at the same time”, she said.
No new cases of Zika have been reported in Wynwood since early August. Given that local transmission continues to be a problem in Miami Beach, the continued travel warnings are certainly understandable. “We must also all do our part to remain vigilant and keep the Wynwood zone lifted”, said Scott in a statement. “They need to become a better partner”.
Men and women who had Zika symptoms or were diagnosed with the virus, and who traveled to this area during the Zika zone period, should wait at least six months before trying to conceive. Stern said, declining to delve into his own politics.
