Florida senator and former presidential candidate, Marco Rubio says pregnant women with the Zika virus should not be able to get an abortion, despite the complications of microcephaly and birth defects resulting from the virus.
Florida health officials are investigating a new non-travel- related case of Zika virus in Palm Beach County, but it is not yet clear whether the person contracted the virus from local mosquitoes or from a recent trip to Miami.
The mosquito-borne virus continues to spread in various regions across the world.
The Florida Department of Health stressed that the investigation “does not mean active transmission of Zika virus is occurring in Palm Beach County”, a statement said.
Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida said on August 6 that pregnant women who become infected with the Zika virus should not be allowed to have an abortion, even if they think their unborn baby may have severe microcephaly due to the virus. The infected person had recently traveled to Miami-Dade County, where more than a dozen non-travel-related Zika cases were discovered last week. Fifteen cases of people infected by local mosquitoes have been found in the downtown Miami design district of Wynwood.
“For perspective, that’s a one-square-mile area in a state that covers more than 65,000 square miles”, Visit Florida said.
Governor Rick Scott and members of Florida’s legislature had a Zika-related conference call Friday afternoon. “They breed very voraciously and robustly in standing water”.
