Florida mayor carjacked at gunpoint outside his home

Jeff Triplett, the mayor of Sanford, Florida, was leaving a friend’s home at around 2:15 a.m. when three male suspects, one of whom had a gun, stole his Mercedes and wallet, police told WKMG-TV. One person who was arrested was an 18-year-old male and the other one was a male who was 17 years old. The mayor’s wallet reportedly had his city identification, two credit cards, a bank card, and $300 cash.

The Sanford Police Department is actively searching for a third suspect in the carjacking and armed robbery.

Police arrested 18-year-old Jermine Horne and a 17-year-old accomplice after they wrecked Triplett’s Benz while being chased by police.

In an interview with WESH, the Florida mayor called the experience of getting carjacked and being the victim of a crime “unnerving”. A police officer saw the vehicle near the scene of the crime and attempted to stop it.

Minutes after the robbery, a police officer spotted the auto speeding away from the scene, an arrest report said.

“It is disheartening when this type of crime takes place in the City of Sanford”, he said in a statement later.

Two people have been arrested after Sanford’s mayor was carjacked Saturday, the Sanford Police Department said. Horne has also been charged with “contributing to the delinquency of a minor”.
