Police said that the mother was sleeping when she heard something that sounded like an intruder at around 11:51 p.m. on Tuesday, the Orlando Sentinel reported. The woman then discovered it was her daughter. That noise was actually the sound of her daughter, Ashley Doby, moving about the house. Her death is being characterised by St Cloud Police as an “accidental shooting”, according to Roberts.

The woman told police she fired a single shot when she heard the footsteps approaching quickly. The homeowner was also taken to the hospital for observation. “Please, please … oh my God”.

Police said the shooting appears to be accidental, but the investigation is ongoing.

Because the shooter wasn’t a law enforcement officer, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will not be investigating.
