Florida’s 10-day back-to-school sales tax holiday begins

The back to school tax free weekend started twenty years ago with only clothing and basic back to school items like notebooks covered.

Even if you aren’t in school, don’t have kids, and aren’t buying school supplies, you can still benefit.

In addition, merchants in states with sales-tax holidays often plan their back-to-school sales to coincide with the event.

J. Craig Shearman, the spokesman for the National Retail Federation, was quoted by USA Today as saying the tax holiday is “about putting clothes on children’s backs”.

Over the weekend, now through midnight on Sunday, August 9, shoppers have the opportunity to purchase select clothing and footwear without sales tax. Of those surveyed, 32 percent of shoppers for college students will comparison shop online for the best deals, up from nearly 28 percent past year.

Personal computers, including laptops or desktops, and accessories like a monitor, mouse, modem, printer, keyboard, and also software having a taxable value of $350 or less. JCPenney staff said they’re offering door-buster sales and additional discounts with buy one, get one free options and slashed prices. Sports equipment, cellphones and computer-related items such as printers also get taxed.

“We are excited about the extended sales tax holiday that families and shoppers of all ages will be able to take advantage of”, said FRF CEO Rick McAllister. However, it is not applicable for clothing or school supplies that are purchased in a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging or airport, and businesses that are open Friday and Saturday are required to participate. The New York State Tax Department issued a reminder on Tuesday, August 4 that “Every Day is New York Sales Tax Holiday”. No tax means a $33 savings on that bill.
