The annual Tax Free Weekend has officially begun, giving shoppers in 12 states a chance at spending their hard-earned money without having to calculate additional amounts of sales tax into their register totals. Some lawmakers who voted for it said they did so reluctantly and hoped the measure would get a closer examination next year. “Kentucky should get with it and do the same”. “I’ve been in Florida when they’ve had them there, and it seems to draw people into the stores. But let’s wait and see what the numbers say”. The cities of Poplar Bluff, Leadington, Farmington, Desloge, DeSoto, Crystal City, Marble Hill, and Ironton have also opted out of the tax holiday.

“We always really look forward to it, because it’s slower in the summer and it gets us ready for the upcoming holiday”, Taylor said. Miller did not yet have a list of the stores that may do that.

Online purchases of qualifying products will also be exempt from the sales tax as long as the orders are placed during the August 7-9 exemption period and the sellers have the items available for immediate shipment.

“You support the businesses that support our schools and charities and create jobs in our communities”, Elebash said. “I don’t think it will be like Black Friday weekend”.

According to the Monthly Consumer Survey from the National Retail Federation, 29 percent of households with school-age kids nationwide are planning to spend more than last year on back-to-school items, up from almost 24 percent saying the same thing last year. Batteries, CDs and DVDs, cell phones, video game consoles, some books, computer paper, staplers, staples, masking tape, gift cards and sunglasses, among other items are not tax free.
