Florida’s Governor Declares State of Emergency As Tropical Storm Colin Approaches

High temperatures warm to near 90 in the Upstate and low 80s in the mountains, with humidity and a strong breeze.

Meanwhile, much of Florida’s western coast was under a tropical storm warning Sunday, with the threat of heavy rains and high wind moving quickly northeast from the Gulf of Mexico. He also activated the Florida National Guard, which remained on alert on Tuesday.

“Maximum sustained winds are near 60 miles per hour (95 km/h) with higher gusts, although the system’s strongest winds and heaviest rains are located over water well southeast of the center”.

The storm made landfall in northwest Florida early on Tuesday, impacting Georgia and SC on its path to the Atlantic.

Pearson said he expected skies to clear along the Outer Banks, good news for tourists who have flocked there for early summer vacations.

The National Hurricane Center discontinued all tropical storm warnings as the remnants of Colin speed off into the Atlantic Ocean. Twenty-four counties in the state were under flood watch due to the storm.

Tropical Storm Warnings are not in effect from Indian Pass to Englewood Florida on the Gulf Coast, and from Sebastian Inlet Florida to Oregon Inlet North Carolina. The last three months have been the wettest in Texas history and have left several areas, from Austin to Houston, under water, as reported by TRUNEWS. Morris said she’s not anxious about the early start to the 2016 hurricane season, but will continue to listen to weather reports and take precautions when needed.

“We’re bracing for a really bad thunderstorm, essentially”, said Dennis Jones, director of the Chatham County Emergency Management Agency. Further south, officials distributed sandbags along the coast over the weekend.

Florida Governor Rick Scott was in Jacksonville Tuesday thanking first-responders for being prepared for Tropical Storm Colin, which passed through the First Coast Monday evening. The city of St. Petersburg said it was pumping sewage into Tampa Bay because its sewer system has been overloaded with rainwater infiltrating leaky sewer pipes. Some areas could get as much as 8 inches and the heavy rain could prompt some evacuations, the National Weather Service said.
