Florida’s Will Grier suspended for season after positive PED test

The eighth-ranked Gators (6-0, 4-0 Southeastern Conference) have a news conference Monday afternoon and are expected to announce Grier’s suspension.

The Gators, among the nation’s biggest surprises and ranked No. 8 in Sunday’s AP Top 25, face No. 6 LSU in a key SEC game Saturday.

Wasn’t that the goal this summer, with new coach Jim McElwain trying to work through a few serious depth issues, and aren’t the 6-0 Gators closer to reaching it than ever seemed realistic to hope? Florida is plenty capable of still winning a mediocre SEC East division without Grier.

This will be the second year in a row LSU will play a back up quarterback from Florida and the fourth game in a row that LSU will play a back up quarterback. It’s an honest mistake, and yet can be prevented by checking with our medical staff. This is a mistake we’ll learn from.

Florida held a team meeting Monday morning to address the Gators about Grier’s suspension.

“I took an over-the-counter supplement that had something in it”, a highly emotional Grier told reporters Monday.

History shows that Harris doesn’t need to be Tim Tebow to get a win at LSU, providing the Florida defense continues its great play. There should at least be an explanation of what the athlete tested positive for and whether it really was acquired over the counter or illegally, if only to serve as a further warning for those who might be unaware of all the places PEDs can be found.

Harris will be tasked with helping them stay there.

Is it possible that the all-powerful SEC gets left out of the playoffs despite having so many solid teams?

“What is bothering me most as a diehard Gators fan, is how am I going to explain this to my 7-year-old son who watches the Gators with the same passion I do?”

Florida Treon Harris Treon Harris????

“And I’m really, really sorry to everyone, truly sorry”. Later, a UF spokesman said he wasn’t sure the school was allowed to release the name of the substance because it is part of a medical record. Grier is paying an outrageous price for something that, so far as we know, was completely legal outside the arcane rules governing big-time college athletics.

Grier was the Parade National Player of the Year after his stellar senior season in 2013 with Davidson Day.

McElwain said Grier tested for an “over-the-counter supplement”.

This is his last chance to salvage his college career and he’s in a prime position to take advantage of this opportunity after losing his job earlier and serving a suspension.

Bell started the season opener against Old Dominion and threw a pair of touchdown passes before suffering a jaw injury.

After throwing for 3,031 yards, 22 TDs and 9 interceptions a year ago as a 62.7 percent passer, the barely-recruited Lynch is completing 70.5 percent this season with 1,535 yards, 10 touchdowns and no interceptions.
