Florida Sinkhole Opens in Same Spot Where Man Was Swallowed in 2013

Rivera estimated the new hole to be 17 feet wide and 20 feet deep.

The hole originally opened below the home where Jeffrey Bush was sleeping in March 2013.

In March 2013, 37-year-old Jeffrey Bush was in his bedroom when the earth opened and swallowed him and everything else in his room. According to USA Today, Bush’s brother, Jeremy, was rescued, but Jeff’s body was never recovered. He even jumped into the hole but was rescued by authorities as the ground crumbled around him.

Jeremy Bush was seen at the site Wednesday.

The home, along with two houses on either side, were demolished, and the hole reopened on what is now vacant land.

Officials have not said what steps they are taking, if any, to fill the sinkhole after it opened for the second time. And folks said the fact that the ground opened again made them nervous.

Rivera says that no one has been injured from the new sinkhole and that no nearby homes have been evacuated. She added that she felt it odd that her dog, a beagle named Muppet, refused to go in the backyard the previous night and Wednesday morning. They occur because the entire state has limestone beneath it, which slowly dissolves from weak natural acids in rain and soil, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
